What is The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant that helps homeowners in England and Wales switch from old gas, oil or electric heating systems to cleaner, more energy-efficient heating.
If you’re thinking about installing a heat pump, the scheme can make it much more affordable by contributing £7,500 towards the installation cost.
The grant is available for air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and, in some cases, biomass boilers for homes that aren’t connected to the gas grid.
Rather than paying the grant to you directly, the government pays it to your installer. The amount is simply taken off your installation quote, so you pay less from the start without having to claim the money back yourself.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available to eligible homeowners and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales and is currently expected to run until the end of 2027.
If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, there are separate government funding schemes available.
What funding does the scheme offer?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £7,500 towards the cost of installing a low-carbon heating system, helping to reduce the upfront cost of upgrading your home’s heating.
You can get one grant per property. If you’re eligible, you could receive:
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump (including water source heat pumps)
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler (where eligible)
- £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump
Your installer applies for the grant on your behalf, and the funding is deducted from your quotation, so you don’t have to complete any complicated paperwork yourself.
Biomass boilers are only available for certain properties, usually those in rural areas that aren’t connected to the gas network. Heat pumps are suitable for many more homes and are the most common systems installed through the scheme.
Who is eligible to apply?
You might be eligible if you
- Live in England or Wales
- Own your property, whether it’s a home or a small non-domestic property
Property eligibility
Your property needs to:
- Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which you can find and check on the Gov.uk website.
- Note: New build properties and social housing are generally not eligible, except for custom-build properties (like if you’re building your own home).

Technology eligibility
To qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, your new heating system must:
- Be installed by an MCS-certified installer.
- Replace your existing fossil fuel heating system.
- Meet the heating and hot water needs of your property.
- Meet the latest government and MCS installation standards.
Hybrid systems that combine a heat pump with a fossil fuel boiler aren’t normally eligible. However, systems that combine a heat pump with renewable technologies, such as solar thermal, may qualify, provided the heat pump supplies your home’s main heating and hot water.

How can I apply for the BUS Grant?
The good news is that you don’t need to apply for the grant yourself.
Applications can only be submitted by MCS Certified installers, and Cloverleaf Renewables will take care of the entire process for you.
(You can check on the MCS website for our installer number (NAP-62233)).
Here’s how the process works:
- We’ll visit your property and check whether you’re eligible.
- We’ll provide a fixed quotation with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant already deducted.
- If you’re happy to go ahead, we’ll apply for the grant on your behalf.
- Ofgem will send you an email asking you to confirm the application.
- Once you’ve confirmed, we’ll carry out the installation.
- After everything has been completed, we’ll claim the grant directly from the government.
It’s a straightforward process, and we’ll guide you through every step from your initial survey right through to installation.

Before drawing up a design, we will check your eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
The £7,500 contribution from Ofgem towards your new air source heat pump installation can make a massive difference to your investment, and sometimes, it can be a deal-breaker.

Once you are generally happy with the price point and the advice you’ve received up to this point, we’ll proceed to the technical survey.
One of our MCS designers will visit your home for a more detailed inspection and refine our initial quotation. A technical survey will not be required for properties in planning and not built since all the information will be obtained via the architectural drawings.

Using all the data discovered by the technical survey, our designers will determine the correct size radiators or underfloor heating system needed to match our heat loss calculation.
At this stage, the heat pump size may also be adjusted if the provisional size chosen does not align with the building’s heat loss requirements.

You will receive a final quote from us that reflects all our previous discussions, along with a proposal pack.
This pack contains all the necessary MCS-compliant documents to review and sign. At this stage, we hope you feel confident in signing your contract with Cloverleaf and scheduling your project. See our example of the proposal pack for reference.
