What is The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, previously known as the Clean Heat Grant, is the UK government’s new plan to help people switch to eco-friendly heating systems. It’s part of the country’s efforts to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050. This scheme replaces the Renewable Heat Incentive, which ended in March 2022.
It mainly targets homeowners in England and Wales, encouraging them to move from old, polluting heating systems to more efficient ones like heat pumps. The government has allocated £450 million over three years for this scheme, as part of a larger £4 billion strategy. It’s expected to run until 2028.
If you’re eligible, you can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to get financial help with installing low carbon heating systems. This support is important because these systems can be more expensive upfront compared to traditional ones. The scheme covers different technologies, including air source and ground source heat pumps, as well as biomass boilers for homes without gas connections.
The funding is given to installers in the form of grant vouchers once the installation is complete. This makes the process easier for homeowners and encourages more people to choose sustainable heating options. The scheme fits into the government’s wider plans to reduce carbon emissions and promote greener energy solutions.
Residents of Scotland and Northern Ireland may have other funding options available, so it’s worth checking for schemes tailored to those regions.
What funding does the scheme offer?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants of up to £7,500 to help offset the initial installation expenses of low carbon heating systems. These grants are applied for by the installer and should be deducted from the total installation cost in their quote. Depending on eligibility, beneficiaries may claim:
- £7,500 towards the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps
- £5,000 towards the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
For heat pumps to qualify for the grant, they must have a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of at least 2.8. Water source heat pumps are categorised similarly to ground source heat pumps by the government.
Biomass boilers are eligible under specific circumstances, primarily in rural locations and properties not connected to the gas grid. Heat pumps, on the other hand, are eligible regardless of grid connectivity.
Who is eligible to apply?
You might be eligible if you
- Live in England or Wales
- Own your property, whether it’s a home or a small non-domestic property
Property eligibility
Your property needs to:
- Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which you can find and check on the Gov.uk website.
- Note: New build properties and social housing are generally not eligible, except for custom-build properties (like if you’re building your own home).
Technology eligibility
For your chosen low carbon technology to be eligible:
- It must be commissioned on or after April 1, 2022.
- It should fully replace an existing fossil fuel system, such as oil, gas, or direct electric.
- Its installation capacity should be no more than 45kWth, which typically covers most homes.
- It must meet all the space heating and hot water demands of your property.

Additionally, any heat pump you choose must have a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of at least 2.8.
Hybrid systems that use both a fossil fuel source and solar thermal heating systems are not eligible for this scheme. However, if a hybrid system is installed with a heat pump and solar thermal, it may be eligible as long as the heat pump covers all heat and hot water requirements.

How can I apply for the BUS Grant?
Application for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is exclusively open to MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited renewables installers and is administered by Ofgem, the Government’s scheme administrator.
To apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, you must contact a Vaillant MCS Certified heat pump installer. Of course, Cloverleaf are MCS Certified which you can check on the MCS website (Installer Number NAP-62233). Here’s how the process works:
- Your installer will assess if your proposed installation qualifies for the grant.
- They will provide you with a quote for the installation, including the deduction for the BUS grant.
- After your approval, your installer will submit your details to Ofgem for application.
- Your installation will be carried out in compliance with industry standards and scheme requirements.
- Once the installation is complete and commissioned, the installer will redeem the grant voucher. Vouchers must be redeemed within specific timeframes: within 3 months for air source heat pumps or biomass boilers, and within 6 months or by March 31, 2028 (whichever comes first) for ground source heat pumps.

One of our MCS designers will visit your home for a more detailed inspection and refine our initial quotation. A technical survey will not be required for properties in planning and not built since all the information will be obtained via the architectural drawings.

Using all the data discovered by the technical survey, our designers will determine the correct size radiators or underfloor heating system needed to match our heat loss calculation.
At this stage, the heat pump size may also be adjusted if the provisional size chosen does not align with the building’s heat loss requirements.

You will receive a final quote from us that reflects all our previous discussions, along with a proposal pack.
