Creating a greener solution for high demand

At Cloverleaf, we prioritise incorporating renewable energy solutions into our clients’ properties. In this case study, our client, driven by environmental consciousness and high hot water demands due to a household of two adults and two teenagers, sought to implement solar thermal technology on their property.

Requirements
To provide an solar thermal solution in a restricted space for an environmentally conscious homeowner, that would ensure a continuous supply of hot water for the family, while reducing costs.

Solution
• Flat Roof: Viessman Vitosol 300-TM
• Integrated 250L twin-coil slimline cylinder.
• Backed by a high-efficiency condensing boiler.
• Optimised for a superior performance.
The property, a small Victorian house, initially posed challenges for integrating solar thermal due to space limitations.
Solution
Through detailed surveying, we identified an optimal solution: fitting the Viessman Vitosol 300-TM kit onto an A-frame on the flat roof of the rear extension, utilising a small footprint of approximately 5x5m. Evacuated tube collectors were chosen for their superior performance in colder and cloudier conditions, ensuring efficiency even in adverse weather.

Implementation
Prior to installation, rigorous assessments were conducted to ensure structural integrity and compliance with MCS criteria. The discreet placement of panels ensured minimal visual impact from the back garden.
The solar thermal system was integrated with a 250L twin-coil slimline cylinder to accommodate space constraints. Backed by a high-efficiency condensing boiler, the system was meticulously configured to supplement heating only when solar heating was insufficient, ensuring a continuous supply of hot water.

Optimisation
To address the challenge of a slightly undersized cylinder, the maximum temperature was increased to 85 degrees Celsius. Cold water blending reduced the temperature to 55 degrees Celsius for bathing and showering, maximising the utilisation of free solar-generated hot water.
Results
The hybrid system effectively ensured uninterrupted hot water supply while reducing reliance on conventional gas heating. The client achieved significant energy savings and contributed to environmental sustainability.
Expansion Potential
Recognising the applicability of this solution to similar properties in London, we anticipate widespread adoption among environmentally conscious homeowners. Solar thermal technology offers a compelling renewable energy solution, significantly reducing gas bills and qualifying for government incentives such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
